Accent Your Style with Albert Jake Jewelry

Fabulous Turquoise from Chacodog

I recently discovered beautifully handcrafted jewelry by Albert Jake, and he has become one of my favorite designers. One of the reasons I like his work so much is that he creates a wide variety of cross pendants, which I collect. He also uses a lot of turquoise is his pieces, which is my favorite stone. I never get tired of turquoise and I don't think I ever will.

Navajo silversmith Albert Jake was born in 1959 in the Zuni Pueblo south of Gallup, New Mexico. Albert learned the art of silversmithing from his parents and began making jewelry in 1987. He specializes in traditional set stones and cluster jewelry with intricate stampwork. He is renowned for the precise detail and execution of his work, and for the fine natural stones that he uses in his pieces. A man of many talents, he is also a sandpainter and a potter.

Several websites feature jewelry by Albert Jake, but Chacodog has one of the largest selections that I have found, including a variety of cross pendants! The Turquoise, Gaspeite and Spiny Oyster Cross Pendant (left, $185) is set wtih four long ovals of Sleeping Beauty turquoise, four small rounds of gaspeite, and a square of orange spiny oyster at the center of the cross, rotated to a diamond shape. The border of the cross is sculpted and highlighted with traditional Navajo decorative stamping. The bale has grooved stamping as well. The total length of this cross pendant (including the bale) is 3". The Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Drop Earrrings (center, $105) resemble a classic style that Albert practices in making large bale pendants by highlighting his stones with radiating grooved stampwork. I have these same earrings with onyx stones and I love them. They are a good size for most everyone to wear at 1 7/16" long. The Sleeping Beauty Cross Pendant (right, $185) is a classic cross with a finely sculpted edge and very intricate stampwork. All of the stones in this cross are fine Sleeping Beauty turquoise, giving the cross pendant a very rich look. The total length of this cross pendant is 2 7/8" (including the bale). The cross pendants and earrings featured here are also available with different stones, such as coral, spiny oyster, lapis and onyx. How are you ever going to choose?

Visit the Chacodog website to see and purchase a large selection of beautiful jewelry by Albert Jake.

Glad to see you highlighting the work of one of our favorite Navajo silversmiths.
In the Los Angeles area, come see a wide selection of his work at Santa Fe Crafts Native American Gallery at 1123 Mission St in South Pasadena.
